MILESTONE EXHIBITION IN AURIZBERRI

Milestone exhibition in Aurizberri

The milestones are displayed in the town hall of Aurizberri/Espinal, in a free, permanent exhibition that is always open to the public. To complete the exhibition, there is a map showing the road’s route and some Roman materials that were found in the area (for further information about the exhibition, click on the Mugarriluze milestones).

Members of the Aranzadi Science Society team were studying the layout of the Roman road Iter XXXIV that linked Astúrica with Burdigala (present-day Astorga and Bordeaux), in the Urrobi river basin and Ibañeta pass. In this context, Juan Mari Martínez Txoperena located three billiards, two of them epigraphic. These last two were of propaganda function, since they praised the emperors of the time.

One of the milestones found in its entirety corresponds to the period of the mandate of Emperor Constantius Chlorus (c. 305-306). It is a piece carved in a block of local Triassic sandstone, pink in color, sculpted, rectangular in section and with the original surface reserved for the engraving of the inscription. The engraving is done in a rustic capital letter, in a careless style but clearly. Use a short form, typical of the Lower Empire.
